Dressing up in costume is one of the most popular Halloween traditions. We develop a love of the tradition early on in life when we’re just young children. A lot of people pick their favorite characters from movies and television shows. When a popular movie has just been released, there tends to be a lot of people dressing up in costume based on the main character of that movie. But keep in mind this also means that you’re likely to run into several people who are wearing the exact same costume as you.

Some people choose characters that were in older movies. This decreases your chances of running into someone with the same costume as you. If you choose a character from a popular horror movie, there’s still a chance you’ll run into your clone even if it’s an older movie. People tend to emulate characters from scary movies a lot. Lots of people choose to dress up as monsters. Some of the classics are werewolves, vampires, and zombies. The problem with these monsters is that they’ve been around so long, so of their older versions have become viewed as hokey and cheesy.

For example, vampires have taken a variety of more modern looks. If you dress up like the classic vampire, in a Dracula suit, using one arm to cloak your mouth with your cape, and say anything along the lines of “I vant to suck your blood!”… You might come across as really out-dated and corny. If you’re going to be passing out candy to trick-or-treaters, it might actually be a good idea to go with the older, popular version of a movie monster so as not to scare the kids as easily.

If you don’t have a lot of money to spend, some Halloween costume ideas can be easily constructed using your regular clothes and simply adding one or two accessories. The cowboy or western is one example of this. If you already own a white dress-shirt and blue jeans, all you need to add is boots and a hat, plus maybe a length of rope at your side to add to the appearance. As another example, if you already own a suit, just add a fedora and maybe an unlit cigar. Now you can pass as a mobster.

If you’re going to base your costume off a real-life villain, use a bit of caution. Typically, the longer ago the villain was alive, the more likely it will be acceptable for you to dress as them. For example, some people go to Halloween parties dressed as Jack the Ripper. The Whitechapel murders took place over a hundred years ago and so people are a bit de-sensitized to the event. Thus, Jack the Ripper is a fairly acceptable costume. However, if you try to go to a party dressed as an infamous serial killer who operated less than a full generation ago; you’ll turn heads for all the wrong reasons and might even be asked to leave.

Use some imagination and you might come up with something that no one else has thought of …or at least find a way to create something out of the ordinary.
