Ghost Tours: Take a Walk Thru Haunted Nights
People want to make the most out of their holidays and this includes Halloween. When you were a kid, enjoying Halloween was easy. You go trick or treating and then eat candy for the rest of the night. As an adult, you try to be more creative. One option you might consider is taking part in a ghost tour. This can be a great way to celebrate Halloween to the fullest.
Spooky locations fascinate people. Some of the most notable places from famous horror movies were based on real locations. Stephen King’s “The Shining” was inspired by the Stanley Hotel in Colorado.
Locations like these are usually the focus of ghost tours. You’ll get to visit and learn about real places with a twisted and eerie past. They’ll tell you about the bizarre actions that took place and the spirits of people who may still be lingering in the area because of it.
Ghost tours are most popular in towns that have an interesting history. In America, some of the most popular spots are buildings that were in use during the colonial era, as well as areas that were occupied during the Civil War. Cities like St. Augustine, Florida or Savannah, Georgia have buildings that have been standing for generations. Buildings that have housed their fair share of horrors and unspeakable crime. Places like this have a sort of presence to them, or sort of thickness in the air. Even many people who don’t believe in ghost have to admit that the old walls of these buildings, which have contained the screams of murder and madness; have a strange ability to make your skin crawl, as if some ancient threat still lingers.
New Orleans, Louisiana, with its background of Voodoo and black magic, also has several ghost tours that will send chills up and down your spine.Towns that don’t have a lot of history may not have any ghost yours available. But there may be an older town within driving distance of your location. If on vacation you visit a historical town, be sure to see if there are any ghost tours available. Ghost tours are often available year round, not just on Halloween; although Halloween tours are often the best as they pull out all the stops.
Lots of ghost tours now have websites so you can learn more about the ones in your area before making a decision. They should list the locations that will be toured and you can see if they interest you. Some ghost tours have special aspects that make them unique. For instance, some tours will drive you from one haunted locations to the next via a modified hearse. The long area in the back that once held a coffin has been modified into a sort of limo-style seating. With others, the tour guides are dressed in full colonial wear and speak with an accompanying dialect; so as to emulate an individual during the time in which the toured buildings were created. Some tours are walking tours and for some you ride in trolleys. When you make your reservations be sure and asked how the tour is transported. You might not want to do a lot of walking with small children or an elderly person.
If you find a ghost tour you might like to go on, be sure to read reviews to see how scary it is. While being scared is the idea, different groups of people are going to look for different levels of fear. If you have young children, you may want to look for a ghost tour that isn’t as scary. Of course there are also crowds who are looking for genuine scare. Some tours cater to both groups by offering different tours at different times of night. Earlier tours may take place while there is still some light out, the guides may hold back on their costumes to look less scary and the eeriest locations such as graveyards might be skipped. Then, after dark, they switch to the tour where they pull out all the stops, and do all in their power to scare you. Be sure to observe the schedule and make sure you’re going on the tour that suits your family best.
